Arequipa is a beautiful city that was founded by the Spanish in 1540 in a place specially chosen for their natural beauty and warm climate. This beautiful city is located at 2400 meters above sea level and the Misti volcano over 5822 meters high. Arequipa known as the White City because most of its houses and buildings are constructed of white ashlar stone and dating from the colonial era surrounded by stunning natural landscapes. The main square: Admired not only for its beauty but also because it is the central point of the city. In the center of the square is a bronze fountain consists of 3 courses and crowned by a character called “Tuturutu” according to the history he was the person responsible for advising of any news event. Arequipa has a cathedral built in the seventeenth century with ashlar and brick, it was destroyed by fire in 1844, but restored after 24 years. The interior of the cathedral is beautiful, with its large size really awesome. Where we find an organ brought from Belgium, a devil that comes from France, an altar Italian model, and every corner that will surprise you. Santa Catalina Monastery: Founded on September 10, 1579 thanks to the donation of assets of Maria de Guzman widow of Don Diego Hernandez de Mendoza. A miniature city that housed the nuns Arequipa for over 400 years, is the most important attraction possessed by this beautiful city, open to the public in 1970, with an innumerable amount of colonial artwork. The Museum Andean Sanctuaries – UCAM: Here are the remains of the mummy named Juanita, belonging to the Inca nobility. In 1995 was made an expedition to Ampato Snow mountain to observe the eruption of Sabancaya volcano and the possible detection of any archaeological evidence, having successfully the mummy Juanita locate in very good condition except for some parts of the body. A month later was discovered 2 more mummies over 5800 meters. Yanahuara viewpoint: Built in the nineteenth century, has a series of arches with inscriptions of the most important people.
